Outlook for 2008: Essential Email Marketing Deliverability Guide

How Reputation Impacts Deliverability

There are a number of reasons that emails bounce. Hard bounces, or emails that have permanent delivery errors, occur when the email address is invalid because the domain name doesn’t exist or the recipient is unknown. Because these emails are undeliverable, you must remove them from your lists immediately as a high number of bounced messages will damage your reputation with ISPs. Soft bounces, or emails that are temporarily unable to be delivered, occur when the recipient’s email inbox is full or the server is down. Because these are temporary issues, it is okay to send the messages to these addresses again, but if the attempts fail, you must remove them so your reputation remains intact.

Listrak automatically removes all hard bounces from your list automatically so you will not mistakenly send messages to these addresses in the future. Listrak also allows you to set the number of delivery attempts for soft bounces. If the emails are not delivered within the allotted delivery times, the system automatically removes these addresses from your list, too.

A bounce log is kept so you can view the undeliverable email addresses, the reason the message bounced, the number of delivery attempts, and the bounce date. That way, you can easily keep track of your recipients that cause bounces and, if you notice repeat offenders, you can ban them from your lists.
